Today we took our resident dogs Charlie and Girlie out of the shelter for some quality time together away from the other dogs. As you can see from the photo they loved it.

Belfast Marathon

Well done & thank you to “team Grovehill” who gave up their bank holiday on Monday & completed the Belfast Marathon in just over 4hrs. It’s a great achievement and we are all very proud of them at the shelter.

Our charity shop on Foundry Lane is running low on stock. If you have any items that you no longer want or are doing a clear out we would really appreciate them. We take everything from bric a brac, clothing to furniture. If you are unable to bring them to us we can also arrange to collect them. You can contact us on or 028 8076 0482.

Trap and release

We would like to remind people of our trap and release programme we have at Grovehill. We offer a free service to anyone that has wild cats around their home to come out trap and bring the cats to the vets to be neutered and bring them back the release them. This programme is to help with unwanted kittens. Contact us on 02880760482 to arrange.

I would like to thank Pedro Pet food for their very kind donation of 20 bags of dog food to the shelter. The food bill is one of the biggest out goings we have at the shelter and this will help greatly in reducing this cost, ensuring we can save as many animals as possible. Pedro will also donate 20 bags each mouth. This support is truly amazing and we are very grateful.

Dog show

As part of the Omagh and District canine club companion dog show on Saturday the 26th of April in the Ecclesville Equestrian Centre, we are holding a 17 classes companion show from best groomed to dog with the best trick. Have a look at our Facebook page to see to see the full list of classes. Entry fee is £2 per dog per class and entries start at 11am. Judging starts at 11.30 and all proceeds to go to Grovehill.

Street collection

Last Saturday we had a street collection in Cookstown to raise much needed funds for the animals in the shelter. A big thank you to the volunteers that give up their time to collect also thank you to everyone who made donations. We raised a total of £300.

This week we have received 4 four week old kittens that were found by the river in Drumquin without their mother. These are the first kittens this year and mark the start of kitten season, one of the busiest times of the year at the shelter. The kittens are too young to stay at the shelter and their being fostered out with a volunteer at the moment. They need bottled feed every 4 hours and are doing really well; they won’t be ready for re-homing for some time yet. Follow us on Facebook to keep up with their progress at

During kitten season we always receive calls from the public looking information on how to hand rear kittens.

How to care for new born kittens that have been separated from their mothers:

  • Use substitute kitten milk replacer, formulated specifically for kittens – Don’t give cow’s milk as kittens cannot easily digest this.
  • Follow manufacturer’s instructions carefully regarding dilution, frequency and volume of feeding – overfeeding can be as dangerous as underfeeding.
  • Feeding should be done with great care as it is easy for kittens to inhale the milk and develop pneumonia which can be fatal.
  • Kittens are unable to pass urine or faeces without assistance for the first few weeks of their lives so the area around their bottom needs to be stimulated using a damp piece of cotton wool before and after each feed.
  • Contact your vet if you need more information.

As it’s kitten season I would like to remind cat owners again to have their cats neutered to stop any unwanted kittens.

We have had a great response to our pet selfies and you can still take part. Take a selfie with your pet and post it on Facebook/twitter and txt PSGH14 £2 to 70070 to donate £2 to Grovehill animal trust.
